New Project Call: Climate Change

BioMADE is now accepting submissions for projects that address research and development priorities that will have a direct impact on mitigating the causes and consequences of global climate change.

Priority funding areas include:

  • Sustainable food production: Innovations in food production that reduce the CO2 footprint of food production at and/or transport to DoD operational environments

  • Converting waste to bioproducts: Valorizing waste streams by directly using them as feedstocks for bioindustrial manufacturing

  • Carbon capture technologies: Processes that convert greenhouse gases including CO2 or methane into bioproducts that are of industrial use and are recalcitrant to degradation. These could include but are not limited to biocement, biochar, and bioplastics

  • Lowering the resource requirements for processing steps: Projects that develop innovations in scale-up production or downstream processing steps that substantially reduce energy or utility inputs to improve the net sustainability of biomanufacturing

  • Mitigating the impact of climate change: Projects that develop bioproducts useful in mitigating the negative impacts of climate change, either regionally or globally, are encouraged. For example, bioproducts that can be used to prevent or slow coastal erosion, or bioproducts that mitigate the impact of drought or fluctuating weather patterns are encouraged. Innovations that decrease the water footprint of biomanufacturing processes or allow for biomanufacturing using saline or brackish water fit into this category

Successful proposals will identify a possible DoD use-case for the technology, process, or bioproduct developed as part of their project. Collaboration with a DoD-related laboratory or testing facility is not a requirement but is allowed under the terms of this project, however work done in DoD labs must come from a separate budget (i.e., it cannot use project funds nor be counted towards project cost-share). Relevance to the DoD is a scoring criterium during proposal review and proposals must highlight a DoD-relevant use-case of the innovation.

Timeline

Key dates for proposal submission and decisions for the Climate Change Project Call are as follows:

  • January 4: Climate Change Project Call released to members

  • January 24: Informational webinar and teaming

  • February 1: Concepts due by 11:59 pm PT (optional)
Project teams who did not submit a concept earlier but are interested in doing so may submit a brief concept for BioMADE program management review.

  • February 10: Program managers will provide input on optional concept papers

  • March 1: Full proposals due by 11:59 pm PT

  • April 2023: Notification of acceptance or decline

This funding opportunity is only open to BioMADE members; click here for more information about becoming a member. Project timelines are expected to be a maximum of 24 months. Project cost share of 1:1 is required.

Webinar and Teaming

Attend an informational webinar on January 24 from 1:00-2:30 CT / 11:00-12:30 PT to hear from BioMADE staff and U.S. government representatives about program priorities, cost share guidance, indirect cost rates, and more, plus time for questions and answers.

BioMADE encourages teaming among organizations for this Project Call. If you're looking for a project team, sign up to present a teaming slide at the informational webinar on January 24. Organizations may have one slide and roughly 3 minutes to present. There are two easy steps:

  • Download the slide template and fill it out with information about capabilities, areas of interest, and what gaps you are trying to fill with a partnership, or highlight your organization’s areas of interest.

  • Send the completed slide to pcrespi-funderburk@biomade.org with the subject line “Climate Change Teaming.”

In addition to being presented live on January 24, this information may be disseminated via email to other BioMADE members who are interested in participating on BioMADE projects. Please do not include any proprietary or confidential information in the teaming slides.

To initiate a partnership with another organization, we encourage you to reach out directly to the point of contact listed on the slide. Alternatively, you are free to reach out to your own networks to find potential partners. Please keep in mind that partners must become BioMADE members to receive funding.

Submitting Materials

Optional Concept Paper

Proposers may submit an optional concept paragraph to BioMADE program managers for review by February 1. Program managers will provide input by February 10. There is no white paper required for this Project Call.

Full Proposals

Proposers may submit full proposals electronically via this submission form. You can find detailed instructions and requirements in the full proposal packet materials, which are provided below.

Proposal documents should be submitted as Word documents, PDF documents, and/or Excel files (budgets must be recorded using the budget template provided). Late submissions will not be considered. Team leads are generally expected to facilitate the collection and submission of all documents on behalf of project partners.
