Welcome September 2021 BioMADE Members!

BioMADE is excited to welcome the following new members, who joined in September 2021:

  • Aperiam Bio
Aperiam is taking the guesswork out of biotechnology with computer vision that illuminates critical parts of protein chemistry. It used to be that making a new gene variant required sorting through millions, or even billions of duds to find a few winners — our tools reduce that number to tens!

  • Delgado Community College
Delgado Community College serves as the flagship institution for technical and community colleges in the state of Louisiana and has developed a Science Laboratory Technician Program (SLT) with an emphasis on Biotechnology and Chemistry. Our program has competency-driven course curriculum and commercial partners on board that directly align with building the regional workforce efforts in both translational research and industry labs. Engineered biology has been a cornerstone of the DCC SLT program as we continue to develop capacity for student success and careers in our region. Our program provides students with workforce-anchored skills that are focused on synthetic biology and sustainable fuels, water quality, waste management, biotechnology, and bioengineering pathways. As the need for skilled technical workers in bioindustrial manufacturing continues to grow in the region served by DCC, we are dedicated to ensuring that our workforce readiness programs are poised and closely aligned with the emerging industry needs.

  • Industrial Microbes
Making greener, lower cost materials from renewable methane.

  • Los Angeles Pierce College
Los Angeles Pierce College is one of the 9 colleges within the Los Angeles Community College District, the largest community college district in the United States. Pierce College is developing a Biotechnology training program. Endowed with 420 acres of land and the existing farm on campus, our program will be the only Biotech training program within Los Angeles County that offers a specialization in Plant Engineering & Agriculture (non-pharmaceutical Biotech). With the support from the InnovATEBIO center and the DNA Learning Center (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), we hope to incorporate advanced DNA technology and manipulation techniques into our training program. Our program recently received NSF funding to establish student internship programs in non-pharmaceutical Biomanufacturing. Our advisory boards include industry professionals from non-pharmaceutical Biotech. We are partnering with a local high school to build a model pathway to increase access to the Biotech training program for high school students. Our Biotech training program is expected to launch in Fall 2022.

  • Lygos
Lygos uses advanced biological and chemical tools to convert low-cost sugar to high-value products. We are enabling better supply chain economics and creating sustainable solutions for known chemical compounds and analogs for novel applications.

  • National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
NCERC at SIUE, AKA the National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center, is a nationally-recognized research center dedicated to the development of bio-based products.

  • Solugen
Using proprietary engineered enzymes, Solugen scales synthetic biology quickly and efficiently.

  • University of Michigan
The University of Michigan is a public research university in Ann Arbor, Michigan. With 31,000+ undergraduate students and 16,000+ graduate students, the university has consistently ranked among the best public universities in the United States by major college and university rankings. Known for its comprehensive expertise and collaborative culture, the university has a total of 18 schools and colleges, including the College of Engineering and the School of Environment and Sustainability, and numerous multidisciplinary institutes and centers (e.g. the Energy Institute and Center for Entrepreneurship). The U-Michigan community has been extremely enthusiastic about BioMADE starting from the proposal preparation stage and over 10 faculty from multiple schools/colleges actively participated or supported the process.

  • Waubonsee Community College
Waubonsee Community College (WCC) is a comprehensive community college providing quality, hands-on training and education in 80+ degree and certificate programs at 4 local campuses with online, hybrid, accelerated and part-time programming options encompassing the skilled trades, applied sciences, and technology in addition to liberal arts transfer education. WCC collaborates with communities in five counties to ensure economic growth and viability through programs, both non-credit and credit for individuals, businesses, and industry.
