Pilot Plant Network
Addressing Infrastructure Gaps to Build the Biomanufacturing Industry
The United States faces a foundational gap in domestic pilot- and intermediate-scale bioindustrial manufacturing infrastructure. As a result, American companies often must seek relevant facilities overseas to scale-up their manufacturing for innovative bio-based products from the laboratory to commercial production.
To address this, BioMADE launched its plan for a network of pilot-scale bioindustrial manufacturing facilities around the United States in 2023. With federal and state co-investments, the BioMADE Pilot Plant Network (PPN) will grow to include facilities throughout the U.S. that provide an essential service to growing bioindustrial manufacturing businesses.
These facilities will:
Benefit start-ups, industry, and U.S. Government customers alike
Support American farmers and provide new markets for their feedstocks
Re-shore manufacturing jobs and retain American R&D efforts
Create varied and far-reaching career pathways
Build a domestic supply chain for everyday and valuable products used by Americans
Reduce reliance on foreign petroleum and other inputs
Build and preserve U.S. leadership in the 21st century bioeconomy
Sites are currently announced in Minnesota, California, and Iowa. BioMADE continues to seek partnership opportunities to expand the network in additional states. If your state is interested in partnership, reach out to infrastructure@biomade.org to start a conversation.
