Project Call: Sustainable Logistics for Advanced Manufacturing (SLAM)

BioMADE is now accepting submissions for projects that accelerate technology development related to mitigating the causes and consequences of global climate change through bioindustrial manufacturing. The Sustainable Logistics for Advanced Manufacturing (SLAM) Project Call focuses on:

  • Sustainable food production: Innovations in food production that reduce the CO2 footprint of food production at and/or transport to DoD operational environments.

  • Converting waste to bioproducts: Valorizing waste streams by directly using them as feedstocks.

  • Carbon capture technologies: Processes that convert greenhouse gases including CO2 or methane into bioproducts that are of industrial use and are recalcitrant to degradation.

  • Lowering the resources requirements for processing steps: Innovations in scale-up production or downstream processing steps that substantially reduce resource requirements to improve the net sustainability of biomanufacturing

  • Mitigating environmental impacts: Developing bioproducts useful in mitigating the negative environmental impacts either regionally or globally.

Successful proposals will identify a relevant DoD use-case for the technology, process, or bioproduct developed as part of their project.

Additional details and considerations

  • This funding opportunity is only open to BioMADE members; click here for more information about becoming a member.

  • Project timelines are expected to be a maximum of 24 months.

  • Project cost share of 1:1 is required.

  • Projects funded through the SLAM Project Call will be treated as Agency-Driven Projects, which fall under the invention sharing requirements in the Intellectual Property Management Plan (additional details in the full Project Call).

  • Training tier members are not eligible to lead a proposal for this Project Call but may participate by contributing in education and workforce development-related capacities.

  • Collaboration with a DoD-related laboratory or testing facility is not a requirement but is allowed under the terms of this project, however work done in DoD labs must come from a separate budget (i.e., it cannot use project funds nor be counted towards project cost share).

  • United States Government entities are not eligible to apply or participate in this Project Call.

Submitting Materials

White papers should be submitted electronically via BioMADE’s Proposal Submission Platform through the Member Portal.

Webinar and Teaming

Attend a Proposer’s Day webinar on June 12 at 1:00 pm CT / 11:00 am PT to learn more about program priorities, submitting materials, cost share guidance, and get your questions answered.

BioMADE encourages teaming among organizations for this Project Call. If you're looking for a project team, sign up to present a teaming slide at the informational webinar on June 12. Organizations may have one slide and roughly 3 minutes to present. There are two easy steps:

  • Download the slide template and fill it out with information about capabilities, areas of interest, and what gaps you are trying to fill with a partnership, or highlight your organization’s areas of interest.

  • Send the completed slide to proposals@biomade.org with the subject line “SLAM Teaming.”

In addition to being presented live on June 12, this information may be disseminated via email to other BioMADE members who are interested in participating on BioMADE projects. Please do not include any proprietary or confidential information in the teaming slides.

To initiate a partnership with another organization, we encourage you to reach out directly to the point of contact listed on the slide. Alternatively, you are free to reach out to your own networks to find potential partners. Please keep in mind that partners must become BioMADE members by June 28 to apply for funding.
