Save the Date: ALAKA’I Trainings for Sustainability and Bioeconomy

Save July 12-14 and 17-19, 2023, to attend bioeconomy trainings through ALAKAʻI (Applied Life-Science Academy: Knowledge Advancing Industry). This project explores indigenous Hawaiian and Pacific Island wisdom to inform guiding principles for sustainability and contemporary solutions, and builds fluency in multiple bioindustrial manufacturing disciplines to better implement solutions for climate change while improving standards of living. The sessions are ideal for industry members, educators, students, and the greater bioeconomy community.

ALAKAʻI’s second year of trainings will be offered on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, July 12 – 14, 2023, in Hilo and July 17 – 19, 2023, in Kona. The Hilo session will focus on indigenous perspectives on sustainability in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Islands, with particular focus on how we can meaningfully integrate cultural wisdom and practices into contemporary solutions for sustainable economies. The Kona session will focus on topics identified by the bioindustrial manufacturing sector as important to catalyzing the transition to a sustainable bioeconomy. The Kona sessions will include opportunities for hands-on introductions to key Bioeconomy tools, such as feedstock sourcing/processing, industrial fermentation, TEA/LCA, and communication principles, as well as tours of cutting-edge bioprocessing facilities.

The intervening weekend will include opportunities to explore and tour indigenous Hawaiian sustainable agricultural practices, restoration projects, and Hawaiian/Pacific Island culture.

Participants are encouraged to attend one or both sessions. BioMADE attendees will benefit by gaining insights to think more broadly and effectively about sustainable solutions, and by enhancing their awareness and understanding of multiple disciplines needed to enable successful bioeconomy programs.

If you are interested in joining the mailing list for advance notices, please respond by expressing your interest in one or both sessions to bioecon@hawaii.edu. The project team is reserving room blocks at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel in Hilo and the Marriott Waikoloa Beach Resort and Spa in Kona. Further information on reserving rooms will be made available shortly.

There is no registration fee for the 2023 sessions, but there will be supplemental fees for certain optional activities. Reserve your calendars for: July 12 – 14, 2023 in Hilo, July 17 – 19 in Kona!
