Inaugural Member Meeting a Success!

Over 200 members and U.S. government representatives attended BioMADE's first Member Meeting in St. Paul last month! The Member Meeting was an incredible opportunity to bring together representatives from industry, start-up companies, academic institutions, and government all around a common goal of growing the bioindustrial manufacturing ecosystem in the United States. We hope everyone who attended enjoyed the opportunity to connect, network, and learn from each other.

If you weren't able to attend, you can view the event booklet here to see the types of sessions and speakers, read speaker bios, learn about joining a subcommittee, and more.

New Funding Opportunities

Member Meeting attendees were the first to hear about three exciting funding opportunities from BioMADE:

Schmidt Futures Bioreactor Innovation

This Project Call focuses on innovation priority areas identified in the BioMADE Technical Roadmap with particular attention toward innovations to revolutionize bioreactor design and function. Technologies, including hardware development and engineering, that improve bioreactor design to be more efficient, flexible, and modular are critical for rapid expansion of the U.S. domestic bioindustrial manufacturing capability and capacity, and the focus of this specially funded competition. Read all the details here.

Climate Change

Over the next five years, the Department of Defense is making a new investment of $15.9 million to address DoD climate change needs through bioindustrial manufacturing. These funds will be distributed through BioMADE as directed research projects, with funding expected to be available starting in the fall. Proposals must address a specific, validated DoD need or application related to climate change such as alternative sources of food, new methods for producing lubricants or coolants, and biomanufacturing in places of need. A formal Project Call will be announced later this summer.

Open Project Call

BioMADE also recently launched an Open Project Call, which provides an ongoing path for proposal submissions at any time during the year on any topic – technology, education and workforce development, or 4S. Click here to view the Open Project Call. If you're interested in submitting a white paper, we highly recommend that project teams reach out to a BioMADE Program Manager to discuss project viability and alignment with BioMADE’s mission. Reach out to proposals@biomade.org with a brief description of your project to schedule a meeting.

I was so energized to see the engagement of BioMADE Members with each other, the government representatives, and with BioMADE staff. The great discussions surrounding project opportunities have me encouraged that the next year of BioMADE will bring significant achievements in the bioindustrial manufacturing ecosystem.
