Nanobiotechnology to Inspire the Next Generation of the Skilled Biomanufacturing Workforce

Lead organization: University of North Carolina, Greensboro

Project partners: Forsyth Technical Community College, Genome Insights

Year launched: 2021

This program will inspire students by putting cutting-edge nanobiotechnologies like hand-held DNA sequencers and scanning electron microscopes into their hands to reveal the hidden and powerful universe of soil microbes. By "seeing" that millions of microbes live in every handful of soil, students will come to understand the powerful impact microbes have on society and the environment. They will also learn about the almost limitless possibilities to leverage microbes in bioindustrial manufacturing. These immersive hands-on experiences will be supplemented with tours and lectures at corporations where these technologies are being applied. The National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce at Forsyth Technical Community College will host the in-house sessions.

To maximize the impact of the program, it will focus on “Teaching the Teachers” so they can carry the message to a broad audience of students at community colleges, professional development sites, and to veterans transitioning to civilian life. Ultimately, this project will inspire a future generation of highly skilled bioindustrial manufacturing workers who will develop solutions to key social challenges.

The Veteran's Farm of North Carolina and the North Carolina Farmer Veteran Community are also partners on this project.
