Greener Chemistry via Process Integration and Intensification at Pilot Scale

Organization: Lygos

This project will domestically biomanufacture Ecoteria™, a bio-based malonate product platform. Using downstream processing technology, bio-based malonic acid from fermentation solutions is turned into Ecoteria, which includes malonate esters dimethylmalonate (DMM) and diethylmalonate (DEM).

Malonate esters are valuable compounds with broad industrial application, but producing them from fermentation has proven to be a significant and costly hurdle for the manufacturing industry. These issues are resolved with Lygos’ proprietary downstream processing solution, infrastructure for continuous piloting and product recovery, and recycling and upcycling of waste streams. The resulting products offer safety, sustainability, and supply resilience benefits while meeting or exceeding performance specifications for fragrances, coatings, agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and more. This biomanufacturing process is more efficient, more cost-effective, and safer for the environment than current approaches. Samples of Ecoteria™ are expected by the end of 2024.
